How an income becomes a number of subscribers

Each payment goes through three hands before yours

What a subscriber pays you does not all come back to you. Before you, these take their share:

  • Stripe, which keeps 1.5% and €0.25 on each payment by standard European card, plus 0.7% for managing the subscription.
  • URSSAF, which takes 25.6% of what you collect in a liberal profession, and 21.2% for commercial services.
  • Income tax, on the share the allowance leaves taxable: 66% of your takings in a liberal profession, half for services.
  • Your expenses come on top, and reduce none of this: in a micro-entreprise, no expense is deducted.

A low price costs you twice

Stripe's fixed €0.25 weighs heavily on a small subscription: on €9, Stripe keeps €0.45, or 5% of the price, against €1.33 on €49, or 2.7%. Above all, a low price multiplies the subscribers to find, then to replace: in a liberal profession with €100 of expenses a month, you need 355 of them at €9 to keep €2,000 a month, against 107 at €29.

A subscriber who leaves has to be replaced

With 5% of cancellations a month, you lose 46% of your subscribers in a year. And once departures take as many as you win, your number stops rising: at 10 new subscribers a month and 5% leaving, you stay below 200 subscribers, however long you keep at it. Bringing departures down to 3% a month raises that level to 333.

The ceiling limits your number of subscribers

Above €83,600 collected two years in a row, you leave the micro-entreprise for the standard regime. At €29 a month, that means 240 subscribers at most. For a single person in a liberal profession with no expenses, they leave at most €4,148 a month. If you aim higher, run the calculation again as an EURL or a SASU: a company has no ceiling.

In a company, Stripe and your expenses are deducted

In a micro, you pay contributions on everything you collect. In an EURL or a SASU, Stripe's fee and your expenses come off first, but a manager's or a president's contributions cost more. At €29 a month, to keep €3,000 with €100 of expenses, you need 170 subscribers in a liberal micro, 180 in an EURL and 211 in a SASU. With €500 of expenses a month, the EURL needs fewer: 194 subscribers, against 197 in a liberal micro.

Above €37,500, your price excludes VAT

Below €37,500 of turnover, your subscriptions carry no VAT. Above it, VAT is added to the price: from the following 1 January, or from the day you pass €41,250 within the year. A business customer recovers it. A private customer pays it, unless you lower your price excluding VAT to keep the same displayed price.

A worked example

The same software at €19, then at €29

  1. Julien launches booking software for hairdressers, at €19 a month, registered as a liberal profession. He wants to keep €2,500 a month once his €120 of monthly hosting and tools is paid.

  2. He needs 212 paying subscribers. Each month, 4% of his subscribers cancel: he has to win 9 a month so as not to fall back.

  3. He signs up 15 a month. At this pace, he reaches his 212 subscribers in 1 year and 9 months.

  4. Then he raises his price to €29. He now needs only 138 subscribers, and at the same pace, he gets there in 1 year.

Ten euros more a month spare Julien from finding 74 subscribers, and save him nine months.

Your number looks out of reach

  • Try a higher price. Every extra euro cuts the number of subscribers to find, and to replace.

  • Offer an annual plan. It cannot be cancelled from one month to the next, and Stripe only takes its fixed €0.25 once a year.

  • Measure your cancellations from your first subscribers. It is the figure that decides how long it will take you.

You want to refine

  • The net income calculator redoes the calculation with your real household. Partner, children, other income.

  • If your goal is above the ceiling, the micro, standard regime or company comparator tells you which of these structures leaves you the most.

  • Review the calculation every 1 January, when rates and the tax scale change, and whenever you touch your price.

Your questions answered

Does my software fall under BNC or BIC?

Software sold on subscription falls under BNC or BIC depending on how your activity was registered, and the line is not always clear. Use the category of your registration. If you are not registered yet, ask your tax office, and run the calculation with both.

Micro, EURL or SASU: which needs the fewest subscribers?

As long as your expenses stay low, the micro-entreprise is the status that needs the fewest subscribers for a SaaS: it deducts nothing, but its contributions are the lightest. The EURL catches up as your expenses rise, since it deducts them, and the SASU needs more subscribers than the EURL, its contributions being heavier. Above the micro ceiling, only a company remains possible.

Why do Stripe fees not reduce my contributions?

In a micro-entreprise, Stripe fees do not reduce your contributions, because those apply to everything your customers pay you. Stripe pays you the price minus its share, but it is the full price you declare to URSSAF: no expense is deducted. In an EURL or a SASU, on the other hand, the fee is a company expense.

What cancellation rate should I use?

The cancellation rate to use for a SaaS is your own, as soon as you have it: divide a month's cancellations by the number of subscribers at the start of that month, and average over three months. Before your first subscribers, run the calculation with several values: the gap shows you what each point of cancellation costs you.

What if I offer an annual plan?

An annual plan is brought down to a month for the calculation: €290 a year makes €24.17 a month. Stripe then takes its fixed €0.25 only once a year, whereas the calculation counts it every month: the result leaves you a small margin.
