Copywriting gets presented either as a manipulation technique or as a mysterious gift. It is neither: it is mostly listening work, of which writing is only the final step.
The best sales texts are not the best turned. They are the ones telling readers what they already thought, more precisely than they could have phrased it.
Definition
Copywriting is writing text meant to trigger a specific action: buy, sign up, reply, click. It differs from content writing, which aims to inform or to rank.
The invisible work that does everything
An effective sales text is prepared before writing, and that preparation accounts for most of the result:
- Re-read your customers' words. Messages, reviews, call notes. That is where the exact phrasing of the problem lives.
- List the real objections. The ones you were told, not the ones you imagine.
- Identify the alternative. What the reader does today, including nothing.
Text written in the customer's words converts better and ranks better, for the same reason: those are the words they search with. Copywriting and SEO feed on the same material.
Four rules are enough
| Rule | What it fixes |
|---|---|
| Result before method | Pages describing a product instead of a benefit |
| One idea per paragraph | Text you read twice without understanding |
| Concrete beats adjective | "Revolutionary" replaced by what it saves |
| One action requested | Pages where the reader does not know what to do |
The line worth drawing
Some techniques work short term and turn against you afterwards: fake scarcity, countdowns that restart, arranged testimonials, unverifiable promises. They raise this week's conversion and next month's refund rate.
The test is simple: a technique resting on false information is a problem, commercially included. Real scarcity can be announced, manufactured scarcity eventually shows.
There is a practical reason beyond the ethical one. Pressure applied to someone who was not ready produces a sale followed by a refund, a chargeback, or a customer who leaves within the month. You paid the CAC (customer acquisition cost), you carried the Payment processor fees, and you kept none of the revenue. Techniques that force a decision transfer the cost rather than removing it.
Frequently asked questions
Should I learn ready-made formulas?
They help structure things when starting, provided you treat them as an outline rather than a text. A familiar structure filled with generalities converts less than clumsy but precise writing.
Can I outsource my sales copy?
Yes, but not before selling twenty times yourself. Those conversations hold the real objections, and nobody can guess them for you.
Does longer copy convert better?
Length is not the factor, matching the reader's decision stage is. A reader ready to buy is slowed by long copy. A hesitant reader needs everything that removes their doubts.
How do I know if a text works?
By measuring it, not by judging it. Conversion rate settles the matter, and it regularly contradicts everyone's opinion, including the author's. Our Claude Cowork course shows how to have a model review and tighten a text, without letting it write in your place.
