Cold email: definition, legal framing and realistic rates

Cold email is a commercial message sent to someone who never contacted you. Effective in low targeted volume, disastrous at scale.

Cold email has two opposite reputations, and both are deserved. Sent to five thousand purchased addresses, it is spam that damages your domain. Sent to thirty chosen people, with a message written for them, it is one of the most effective channels there is.

The difference is not the channel, it is the ratio between work done and number of recipients.

Definition

Cold email is a commercial message sent to someone who did not ask to be contacted, in a professional context, to start a conversation.

It differs from Email marketing by the absence of prior consent, which makes it a legally framed exercise and a demanding one on substance.

Warning

The legal framing of unsolicited outreach varies by country and by whether the recipient is a business or an individual. Check the rules applying to your situation with an official source: penalties fall on the sender, not the tool.

What separates a read cold email from a deleted one

DeletedRead
Talks about you firstTalks about their situation first
Generic, sendable to anyoneContains a precise observation
Asks for a meetingAsks for a simple answer
Long, with an attachmentFive lines, no attachment

The second row decides it. One sentence showing you looked at their business before writing completely changes the message's status: it stops being a mass send.

Realistic benchmarks

The figures in circulation are often inflated. On a targeted, well-written campaign, expect:

  • Reply rate: 5 to 15 percent on a very targeted list, 1 to 3 percent on a broad one.
  • Positive replies: a fraction of that.
  • Sustainable volume: twenty to fifty personalised messages a week for one person.

That last point deserves to be taken seriously. Cold email does not scale without losing exactly what makes it work.

Frequently asked questions

Question

Should I follow up?

Once, a week later, bringing something new rather than repeating. Beyond two follow-ups you are no longer convincing, you are insisting, and that is how people get reported.

Question

Can I buy an address list?

It is the best way to destroy your domain's reputation and compromise all future sends, including to your real customers. Build your own list, it is slower and it is the only sustainable route.

Question

Cold email or Paid advertising?

Cold email costs time, advertising costs money. For a high-priced professional offer in an identifiable Niche market, cold email often has the better CAC (customer acquisition cost). For a consumer product, the reverse.

Question

How do I avoid the spam folder?

A properly configured domain, low and gradual volume, no attachments, no decorative images, and text that reads like an email written by a person. Filters mostly detect the formatting of mass sends. Our n8n course covers the tooling for this work, including what must never be automated: the sentence showing you actually looked.
