Automated monitoring: watching without losing your mornings

Automated monitoring watches sources for you and surfaces only what changed and matters.

Monitoring is the first thing dropped when time runs short, and often the first whose absence is regretted. It is also one of the cases where automation brings something a person would not: regularity.

Definition

Automated monitoring means watching information sources at regular intervals, spotting what changed, and surfacing only what deserves your attention.

All three verbs matter equally. Watching without filtering produces a stream nobody reads. Filtering without comparing surfaces the same information every week.

Good to know

Comparison with the previous state is what gives the system its value. A tool sending you a competitor's full page every Monday ends up in an email filter. A tool telling you "their pricing page changed, here is what moved" is read in ten seconds.

What is worth watching

SourceWhat you look for
Competitor sitesPrice changes, new offers
Trade press and blogsEmerging subjects, weak signals
Social networksMentions of your brand
Tenders, directoriesOpportunities matching your criteria
Your tools' documentationAPI changes that would break your automations

The last line is the most neglected and one of the most profitable: being warned that a service is changing its interface before your Workflow break easily repays the setup time.

How to build it

Record the previous state. That is the heart of the system. Without memory of what was seen, no change detection is possible.

Summarise, do not copy. A model comparing two versions and writing three lines on what moved turns a stream into information.

Group into a single send. A daily or weekly digest gets read. Fifteen separate notifications get switched off within three days.

Space out the frequency. A pricing page does not change hourly. One pass a day is enough, and divides consumption by twenty-four: see Trigger.

Plan for silence. A system that sends nothing when nothing changed is a good system. You still need to distinguish "nothing changed" from "the system is broken", hence the value of a periodic digest even when empty.

Warning

Watching a site does not permit everything. Respect terms of use and exclusion files, space out your passes, and identify yourself properly. Overly insistent monitoring gets blocked, and sometimes more.

Frequently asked questions

Question

Do you need an AI model for monitoring?

Not to detect a change, a simple comparison is enough. The model judges whether the change deserves your attention and summarises it, which is precisely the part that took time.

Question

How do you avoid an unreadable stream?

By being strict on criteria from the start. A system surfacing three items a week gets used, one surfacing thirty gets ignored, and ignoring it costs the same.

Question

Does it replace regular reading?

No, and that is not the aim. Automated monitoring covers factual tracking, it does not replace the reading time from which ideas emerge.

Question

How do you set up a first system?

By watching a single source you genuinely care about, with a weekly send. Our n8n course builds that system with memory of the previous state, which is the technical part of the subject.
